Get Motivated
By Regina Bevins

I attended the Get Motivated Conference at the Civic Auditorium/ Coliseum on Wednesday, July 21. Below are the highlights of the conference:

DR ROBERT SCHULLER – KEY NOTE SPEAKER
Dr. Schuller stated that a positive attitude is most important in an individual’s life. He said we should eliminate the word impossible from our vocabulary and from our life. Jesus said in Matthew 19:26: “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”
We are where we are because of how we think (positive or negative).
Nothing is more dangerous than an impossible thinker. We need to eliminate if, when with, whatever, and make things happen.
Dr. Schuller advised us to start the day off thinking anything is possible. DREAM BIG so big that your doomed to fail without God.
Three Highlights
1. Be a positive thinker
2. Believe nothing is impossible
3. Dream Big

BRUCE PEARL – RAISING THE BAR
Bruce Pearl talked about raising the bar in your life.
1. Raise your level of expectations. See yourself in an elevated light. If you believe you are a champion YOU ARE A CHAMPION.
2. Focus on the process not just the end results.
3. Enjoy the process. Compete, get in the game.
4. Identify your niche. What are you good at?
5. Work on your strengths. Everyone knows their weaknesses and focuses on them but you need to involve yourself in strengthening those areas you know you are strong in through training, etc.
6. Focus on the positive
a. Elevate talent well – put people where they are successful
b. Treat everyone fairly but not the same. Identify the buttons that motivate
7. Have a level of confidence in yourself. Work hard. Hard work alone won’t guarantee success but without hard work you won’t be successful.
8. Find balance in your life – Put God first, family next, and everything else will fall into its proper place.
Bruce talked about a story from a Rick Pitino book where basketball was rated (1st), work ethics (2nd), and family (3rd). When talking with his players he asked what was most important and finally someone spoke up and said that family should always be 1st. Any team, basketball, work team, etc., they’re family. Think about the welfare of your work family. Bruce stated “People won’t care what you know until they know that you care.

9. Attitude is everything
a. Talent – Surround yourself with people that are better than you. It’s your choice of how people see you. If you hang with losers, you’re a loser, if you hang with winners, you’re a winner.
b. Teamwork – A team is a group of people working together to achieve the goal or accomplish the task.

If you’re not happy where you are you have two options: (1) lay down and quit or (2) Stay ready, stay focused, and keep your eye on the prize.
c. Tolerance - Tolerate weaknesses, feelings, words, etc. Everyone needs to get along with each other.

If you want to be a great communicator, you first need to be a great listener.
i. Ask questions. You may get other answers or ideas.
ii. Rank your players and let your players rank each other
10. Be hungry and humble
11. Continue to learn (through reading, external or internal
training, etc.)
12. When making decisions make them to the best of your ability. Be
focused, have a game plan, and lay it on the line.
13. Handle adversity.
14. Handle success, don’t change.
15. Take calculated risks – don’t stay in the comfort zone.
16. Before each game – PRAY.

Bruce told us a story about a game where the VOLS were losing and the referee called a foul on them late in the game. Bruce decided to place a defender on the referee. He said that the point of this was: we need to put our best guard on the person that causes us the most pain.

RUDY GUILIANI – Leadership in a Challenging Age
Rudy Guiliani said that the world is changing rapidly and decisions that we make happen fast. He stated that we are living in a revolutionary age – the age of information where we have instant communication across the global through media market, facebook, tweeter, etc. We get information regarding any event instantly versus the days when it would take days, weeks, months or even years information perhaps about a loved one at war. There is such an advance in human knowledge because of media. Communication is a viable tool if you learn how to use media tools as a resource to increase your learning skills. However the disadvantages are that we receive too much information too fast to fully process it. Everything is considered a crisis. Many politicians now days rely on polls (there are too many polls). These individuals are followers and not leaders. Most people are not born leaders by nature. A leader presents morale views, good/bad beliefs, inspiration, and a direct view of the world. Rudy talked about President Reagan. Highlights of his overview: (1) bullies need to be stood up too immediately and (2) programs need to be established to help people become independent and successful and not hinder them.
There are several things that each person can do to be successful:
1. Read books that make you think (if you have lost the passion for reading, pick up something that interests you like cooking, travel, history, love stories, and begin slowly – that passion will soon return) Read 1 book that you’re interested in and then another that will help you to grow.
2. Listen to people you respect. Don’t be afraid to ask people for help. Be strong and if you can’t be strong, pretend you’re strong.
3. Write down your ideas, thoughts, passions, etc. (use your mind)
4. Think – create a little world for yourself (a small retreat you can go too when the world seems larger than life)
5. Pray for guidance in your decisions or actions.
6. Care about people – A true sign of a leader is being there when someone is going through a rough patch. If you’re there for them, they will be there for you.

ALAN ANDERS – FINANCIAL SUCCESS – STOCKS AND BONDS
Alan stated that most people don’t save enough money. Individuals need to believe that they can overcome financial difficulties and achieve everything. Don’t let others define you, only you and God can define who you are. If the market is going up everything is good but when its flat market like we’re in now you can still make money. The key is compound interest. Alan said if you can’t beat them hire someone who can. Below are some investment tips that Alan shared:

1. Search for investments (top stocks great earnings, sales, and cash flow growth)
2. Look at fundamentals. Most have at least 5 green arrows to pass. Determine valuation analysis and margin of safety.
3. GROUP – 80% of stock is institutionally managed
4. Insider trading – blue stuff above – good, blue stuff below – bad
5. Timing is everything If you have 3 green arrows then the time is buy, if you have 3 red arrows the time is sell

Visualize what you want to use the money for. If you fall down, get up.

BOB HARRISON – COSTS AND BENEFITS
Bob said that we shouldn’t sit around thinking about should we or should we not do something, we should just do it. He said each person should think of their differences and the differences that they make. Is the benefit greater than the cost? Listing the benefits puts you on the marketing edge. Deuteronomy 28 lists the costs and the benefits of obeying and disbelief. Identify ways to reduce the cost.

1. Stay connected to previous customers. Read the book “How to swim with the sharks and not get eaten.”
2. Work hard at whatever your doing
3. Remind yourself of previous successes (make you a memory board) you have the power, apply it
4. Recognize the WINNER in you
5. Change your image in 90 days

ZIG ZIGLAR – ITS ALL ABOUT ATTITUDE
Mr. Ziglar had a minor accident which resulted in short term memory loss. His daughter sat with him and asked him interview type questions. Below are Zig’s responses:

DAUGHTER: Dad I understand that you read the newspaper and the Bible daily, why?
ZIG: The newspaper keeps me aware of things happening in my
earthly ream and the Bible keeps me aware of things happening
in my heavenly ream.

ZIG stated
1. You should be a student daily. Look for something new to read or something that challenges you.
2. You should tell the truth all the time. Be faithful in whatever you do.
3. Prepare a wall of gratitude. Encouragement is the fuel which causes people to function.
4. The more things that you have that money can’t buy the more things you’ll have that money can buy.
5. Always tell those around you that you love them and you believe in them.
6. Remember you must first prime the pump before you can get anything out.
7. You’ll get everything you want if and when you help others get what they need.

LOU HOLTZ – LIFE IS ABOUT CHOICES
Lou stated that life is about choices and everything starts with a dream or vision. He advised us to write down a list of thing we want to accomplish in our lives (a bucket list).

W – What’s
I – Important
N – NOW

Everyone wants something to do, someone to hold, something to believe in, and something to hope for.

Make a Plan (stay down or pick self up) Be excited about what you do
1. Have an attitude to chose – only you can do this
2. Have a passion for what you do. You must make sacrifices and get rid of the excuses. Focus on what you have and not on what you don’t.
3. Focus on purpose. If you understand your purpose you’ll embrace change.
4. Have meaningful relationships with others. Lift them up before self.

Three questions people generally ask: (1) Can I trust you? Do right and avoid wrong; (2) Are you committed to excellence? Do everything to the best of your ability; (3) Do you care about me? Recognize people for who they are and accept them.

Ask yourself this question: If I didn’t show up would I be missed?

JAMES SMITH – TOP FINANCIAL SUCCESS

Most people never get in the game but their terrific fans. It’s not the big things that you do in life that makes you successful, it’s the small things. Where you spend your time is where your heart is. God made man 1st and then he fixed it. Fear is of Satan and Courage is of God. James says that employees with JOBs have no loyalty, no confidence, and no control over their retirement. Many are making money mistakes that need to STOP.

Have an estate plan/will
Be aware of tax codes and how to use them
Start a small business
Improve your credit score
Review your retirement accounts
Invest correctly

A wise man seeks council daily but a fool seeks no one.
